Change | Reason |
Administrative/ National Policy/ Mandatory:
Fixed typos and grammatical errors
Removal of dance team | Adheres with national policy that we have a written agreement with a tribe. Also observed to deter membership. |
Removal of outdated terms (clan, gendered language, unit election, Guide to Inductions, etc.) | Adheres to most recent versions of Handbook for Officers and Advisers, Unit Visitations Handbook, and Inductions Handbook. |
Switched elections from 51% to a simple majority
Made explicit that chapters align to districts | Adheres to most recent version of Handbook for Officers and Advisers |
Structural:
Combined Vice Chiefs of Admin & Finance | Both positions do relatively little on their own; provides a year-round responsibility for this officer. Officers are expected to be experienced Arrowmen; there are no “introductory” officer positions. One should be well oriented with OA leadership by the time they are elected as an officer. |
Removal of Shows Committee | The committee has been inactive for several years, including at times that it had an adviser. The responsibilities of this committee would more naturally be placed under the Communications and Events Committees. |
Expansion of Elangomat Committee to be the Ordeal Inductions Committee | The Ordeal has historically been run by a combination of actors, including the Elangomat Chair, Service Chair, Ordeal Master, Ceremonies Chair, Events Chair, and Program and Inductions Vice Chiefs. The oversight of these processes will now be done by a single person to ensure unity and |
efficiency. This person will also oversee and support the Crews and Elangomats directly.
Changed Service Committee to Community and Camp Service | More accurately reflects its purpose in our organization |
Changed Membership Committee to Membership and Activation Committee | More accurately reflects its purpose in our organization |
Lodge mailings are now in-print optional, except for the December mailing for those who pay dues by check. | More flexibility to Comms |
Lodge Chief no longer oversees any committees directly | They have enough to deal with |
Lodge Vice Chief of Chapter Operations now only oversees Chapters and Unit OA Rep Committee | They should be able to focus solely on the heart of their responsibilities and critical aspects of the lodge |
Designated certain LEC members and all previous committee chairs (under 21) as committee members for specific committees | A point of concern has been that committees have a single member. By designating other LEC members as committee members there will always be a solid core of active members on important committees. |
Streamlined process for a Committee to select its non-LEC officers
Required certain certain committees to hold a meeting by a certain date each year | Ensures certain functions of the Lodge are executed properly and in a timely manner |
Edited, revised, and reorganized the responsibilities of several operating committees (Community and Camp Service, Ordeal Inductions, Training, Communications, and Finance Committees and Ceremonies Team)
Added rules for chapter officers | Exists for lodge officers already |
Chapters:
Reduced required chapter meetings to two from four (chapters may still hold meetings if they choose). | Allows more flexibility for chapters to focus on solely engaging events, rather than meetings which have tended to deter members. Chapters’ responsibilities can thus be exclusively fellowship, unit visitations and service. |
Chapters provide a service corps for district camporees and/or council-level events | Chapters are tasked with three functions – holding an event (which should either be focused on service or fellowship), conducting unit visitations, and providing a service corps to the districts. |
Combined finance and admin vice chiefs | Same reason as lodge officers |
Added rules for chapter officers | Exists for lodge officers already |
Elections:*
Elections will take place by the end of January of each year, most likely at the Winter Banquet, with officers instated at the end of the event | The timing of elections has always been awkward since the Lodge is inactive in the period of June to September, which makes the transition difficult for the Lodge Officers. The September Ordeal has usually suffered as a result. Additionally, the officers rarely have time to plan for or support the summer camp program, which remains the Lodge’s most effective Brotherhood conversion tool and key program. By electing officers for the calendar year, the quiet period of January to April can instead be used for officers and LEC members to get oriented with their roles. |
The officer retreat and LLD will occur simultaneously by February | LLDs have always been sparsely attended but moving the date and possibly combining with the officer retreat will help align the two events and ensure that LEC members are being trained before any Lodge events take place. |
